Being famous is getting harder and harder now-days.
You get displayed all over everything and one wrong
step and you get despite. Especially now with internet
access you can get sent terrible messages without
anybody else knowing. When the poet says, ‘How
dreary to be somebody’ It shows that being a
‘somebody’ has just as many downsides as being
a nobody. You are somebody lots of people look
up to and love but sometimes even the biggest fans
forget that you have feelings inside. In earlier times
when the poem (Between 1830 - 1886) was written
everybody had a use or as they said in the poem
‘They'd banish us you know’. This suggests that
if you didn’t help people with jobs or other things
you would be punished or banished. Even though
we don’t get banished these days if we aren't as
much, we still get paid less or get disrespected.

Well done Clara, great reflection - you showed good insight into what the poem was saying. You also compared what being “somebody” might mean back in the 1800s and today. It was clear you understood the poets message that fame has many downsides.
ReplyDeleteMaybe change the word ‘despite’ (end of 2nd sentence) and you can go straight to the top of the class. Lol.
You are correct though Clara despite did once mean scorn or contempt but is used today to mean in spite of, or with disregard to.
After what you found out about fame back then and today - do you think that for yourself being mega rich would outweigh the negative side of fame today?
Thank you for sharing your reflection on this poem. It is interesting that despite how long ago it is written, human nature doesn't really change, and being famous isn't always good. As Jane said, read through the second line for meaning.
